Terms of Use
Practice at your own pace, and your own risk
Second Nature Dojo ("the app") is a martial-arts forms practice-review tool developed by Jeff Dickerson ("we", "us", "our"). By downloading, installing, or using the app, you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
1. What the app is — and isn't
Second Nature Dojo prompts you through movements of a form, kata, taolu, or combo you already know, one step at a time, so you can rehearse it on your own between classes. It is deliberately not an instructional app: there is no video, no pose analysis, and no correction feedback. It assumes you learned the material from a qualified instructor and are using the app as a memory aid, not as a way to learn a form for the first time.
2. Content accuracy
Some of the app's bundled content — step text, translations, and the postures and commands that go with them — has been reviewed by a qualified instructor or fluent speaker; much of it has not, and is a best-effort transcription instead. The app marks each form's review status on its edit screen, and the About screen explains this in more detail. Martial arts have real variation between schools, federations, and lineages — a technique your instructor teaches may legitimately differ from what the app shows for the same named form.
Do not treat the app's content as authoritative. Defer to your own instructor for anything the app and your training disagree on, and use the in-app "Suggest a correction" link (or the errata form) if you spot something wrong — it goes into our review queue.
3. Physical activity and assumption of risk
Practicing martial arts forms and combos involves physical movement and carries an inherent risk of injury, including but not limited to strains, sprains, falls, and more serious harm. By using the app, you acknowledge and agree that:
- You are voluntarily choosing to engage in physical activity, and you are solely responsible for judging whether you are medically able to do so. Consult a physician before beginning or continuing any physical activity if you have any doubt about your fitness to do so.
- You will practice within your own physical ability, on a safe and appropriately clear surface, and will stop immediately if you feel pain, dizziness, or other warning signs.
- The app is not a substitute for supervision by a qualified instructor, particularly for combos, self-defense sequences, or any technique involving contact, joint manipulation, or a training partner.
- You assume all risk of injury or damage arising from your use of the app and from practicing any technique it shows you, to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law.
4. No warranty; limitation of liability
The app and its content are provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including without limitation any warranty that the content is accurate, complete, current, or fit for a particular purpose.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all liability for any injury, loss, or damage — direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential — arising out of or related to your use of the app, your reliance on its content, or your practice of any technique it describes. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain warranties or liability, so some of the above limitations may not apply to you.
5. Subscriptions
The optional "Second Nature Pro" subscription is sold, billed, and managed entirely through the Apple App Store. Pricing, billing cycles, renewals, cancellations, and refunds are governed by Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions, not by us — we have no ability to process a refund or change a charge ourselves.
6. Apple's license agreement
Your use of the app is also governed by Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement, which applies unless we've provided a different one — we haven't, so Apple's standard terms apply to the software license itself. These Terms of Use add to, and don't replace, that agreement.
7. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the app changes. If a change is material, the app will ask you to acknowledge the updated terms again before you can continue using it — see the in-app "Before you start" screen (shown once, and again after a material update).
